    Job Position: Domestic Lifeways Educator

    Reports to: Village Education Coordinator

    Hours: Full-Time, hourly $15-$18 ($31,200-$37,440)

    Primary Function -The primary function of this position is to facilitate meaningful guest experiences in the Historic Village by developing engaging historical domestic life programming. This position will also assist the Education team with program and event needs in addition to overseeing our historical seamstress team to maintain a high standard of historical clothing for our interpretive staff.

    Essential Functions (Responsibilities) include the following:

    1.      Responsible for the overall historical garden programming, planting, care of and harvest; oversee staff caring for historical gardens. Including in-depth knowledge of historically accurate heirloom plants and vegetables.

    2.      Coordinate with the entire Historic Village team to create an on-going, daily historical foodways program that is engaging for all ages. Includes advance planning of cooking demonstrations.

    3.      Train and mentor staff in the various skills needed to implement the historical foodways demonstrations successfully.

    4.      Work with the Education team to coordinate details of events that focus on domestic lifeways related activities. This includes off-site programming at schools and libraries.

    5.      Research as needed to expand and broaden the historical garden and foodways programs, within the education program goals, and to expand your own knowledge and skill set in historic foodways and gardens.

    6.      Oversee the historical clothing closet (HCC) and the HCC staff.

    7.      Track and monitor domestic lifeways budget.

    8.      Work with Education team and selected Youth Volunteers in a domestic life apprenticeship program.

    9.      Connect historical foodways with Sauder Village food services.

    10.  Other duties as assigned.

    Skills, Requirements, and Conditions: Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

    1.      Bachelor’s Degree in history, public history, administration, museum studies, historic preservation, or similarly related subjects

    2.      Knowledge of heirloom plants and vegetables and how to plant, grow and cultivate them.

    3.      Experience with historical clothing with knowledge of clothing from 1803-1928

    4.      Knowledge of planning and facilitating educational programming in informal environments.

    5.      Self-motivated and able to work in a team environment.

    6.      Effective communicator.

    7.      Committed to improving the guest experience at Sauder Village.

    8.      Open to new ideas and willing to be flexible.

    9.      Able to lift up to 50 pounds for short periods.

    10.  Able to stand for long periods of time.

    11.  Able to bend, kneel, stoop, climb and perform repetitive motion.

    12.  Able to work both indoors and outdoors in extreme hot and cold temperatures in a non-climate-controlled environment.                                 

    13.  Able to work in a wide variety of environments.
