Q & A
Q. What does the little flower on
my nametag mean?
A. The little rose on your nametag
simply shows that you are a first time
MOMCC Conference participant. This
is useful to other members, so that they
can be helpful in providing you with
information.
Q. What meals am I provided with?
A. Meals will be provided for the
conference workshops as specified in the
registration packet. The Friday
luncheon and the Friday night dinner are
included with full registration.
Other than that, you're on your own.
However, most hotels have an attached
restaurant and continental breakfast.
[Incidentally, this may be a good
opportunity for you to tag along with
some veteran members and make some new
contacts.]
Q. How do I get to the workshops?
A. You can either drive yourself
or simply carpool with others.
Check at the conference registration
desk or with conference coordinators for
your options. Sometimes rides are
provided for specific workshops.
You can post requests for rides on the
messageboard at the registration table.
Q. Do I have to go to the
conference sessions I signed up for on
my registration?
A. You are not obligated to do so.
We ask you to specify a preference on
the registration for so that we can
assign sessions to the proper room size.
You SHOULD, however, attend the
workshops you signed up for, since
you've already paid for them!
Q. What are the benefits of
talking to strangers at the conference?
A. Networking can be one of the
most beneficial aspects of the
Conference. Sometimes valuable
information or contacts can be acquired
simply by introducing yourself to
someone new. Make a point to talk
to people and to introduce yourself.
You should never leave a conference
without meeting someone new!
Q. Who should I ask if I have a
question at the conference?
A. You can ask anyone really,
because MOMCC members are a friendly
bunch. If you're feeling a little
self-concious, just look for someone
with a green "Board Member" ribbon on
his/her nametag. They will be more
than happy to try and help you.
Q. Why should I attend the
first-timers' get-together?
A. It's a great way to get free
food and drinks! Plus, you get to
meet the members of the Board, get
information/orientation and get your
questions answered in a relaxed,
informal atmosphere.
Q. What's with all the corn?
A. Corn is a very healthy and
nutritious Midwestern food. The
possible uses for corn are endless!
Let them eat corn!
Q. What's with the sock monkey,
and why does everyone snicker when he's
around?
A. The sock monkey is a
time-honored tradition that started
years ago at one of the conference
auctions. Since that time, the s.m.
has returned to most of the conferences
to make an appearance. Sometimes
he's disguised in a cowboy outfit or
even a Star Trek uniform.
Q. What should I wear to the
dance?
A. Some people choose to wear
period clothing, so you may well see a
lot of time periods represented.
On the other hand, some like to just
wear their modern dress clothes.
If you're like many of us, though, your
historic wardrobe may well outstrip your
modern one. Go figure.
Q. What is the Hospitality Suite?
A. This is "where everybody knows
your name..." Um, yeah. At
each conference, there's a room set
aside for general frivolity during the
evening hours. There are usually a
bunch of snacks, interesting people and
lively conversation. Check with
the registration table folks to find out
where the Hospitality Suite is located,
then drop by and have some fun.
Q. What are those little slips of
paper people keep giving me after each
session?
A. Those are the session
evaluations. These are really
important, not only to the presenters,
but to the future conference planners,
as well. Your input lets the Board
in on what the membership is looking for
in terms of quality presentations AND it
gives them lots of ideas for sessions
for upcoming conferences. Rock the
vote!
Q. Can I do any shopping at the
conference?
A. Indeed! Ask at the
registration table where the Vendors'
Room is located. In addition to
finely crafted wares, there are usually
back issues of The MOMCC Magazine on
sale. Oh, there's also an auction
at every conference. Live auctions
take place in the Spring and silent
auctions at the Fall Conference.
These are lots of fun and are
choc-full-o' stuff you absolutely need,
as well as many items you really don't.
The proceeds from the auctions go back
into the MOMCC coffers, so your
purchases really benefit the
organization.
Q. What should I expect to get out
of the conference?
A. Overall, the conference allows
you to meet new people and to learn
about other sites and the issues that
face the world of Living History.
It also allows you to share with others
what you've learned throughout the
years, or to ask questions about what
you need to know.
ENJOY THE CONFERENCE, GOOD LUCK AND HAVE
FUN!
